Dynamo
The magician impossible
Steven Frayne grew up in Bradford, in the north of England, a thin kid with Crohn's disease who learned magic from his great-grandfather as a way to deal with bullies. A few years later, under the name Dynamo, he had become the most talked-about magician on the planet. His series "Dynamo: Magician Impossible" ran for four seasons, was broadcast in almost every country in the world and reached hundreds of millions of viewers, rewriting the rules of magic on television.
His images have entered pop culture: walking across the Thames in front of stunned tourists, levitating with one hand resting on a London double-decker bus, hanging from a helicopter above Los Angeles, phones passed inside glass bottles. His quiet, understated style, closer to a documentary than to a variety show, inspired a whole generation of young magicians who saw themselves in him.
Masters of Magic honoured Dynamo with the Golden Grolla in 2013, in Saint-Vincent, while his series was conquering the world, recognising the artist who had just made magic cool again for millions of young people.
